In a horrifying incident that sent shockwaves through Cameroon’s LGBTQIA+ community and around the world, two men in their forties were viciously attacked and killed by an angry mob in the capital city, Yaoundé.

The men had stopped for a drink at a snack bar and were having what appeared to be a private conversation in their car. But when bystanders noticed the vehicle shaking, they approached and allegedly found the men hooking up.

A mob surrounded the car, dragged the men out, and began brutally beating them. Police intervened and arrested the men, but they were soon released, likely after bribing the officers – a common tactic used by gay men in Cameroon to avoid jail time.

However, the mob spotted the men again as they tried to escape in their car. They were stripped naked and savagely beaten to death, with the gruesome attack captured on video.

The killing sparked outrage and drew sharp condemnation from activists and human rights groups. They slammed the senseless violence while also urging the LGBTQIA+ community to stay vigilant to prevent similar tragedies.

Sadly, attacks like this are common in many African countries where homosexuality is still heavily stigmatised and even criminalised. The LGBTQIA+ community faces constant threats and has little legal protection.

“What happened to these men is just sad, and there should never be a justification for a mob attack. However, I think it could have been entirely avoided,” an activist known as Jane told news.com.au. “We don’t have the luxury of being reckless or taking unnecessary risks in a country where everything that moves seems to want to harm us.”
