Trump’s 2024 Win: What It Means for LGBTQIA+ Rights
Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election has left many advocates and allies worried about the future of LGBTQIA+ rights in the United States. Despite his controversial past, including two impeachments and numerous criminal charges, his return to the White House marks a significant shift in the political landscape.
LGBTQIA+ organisations like the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and GLAAD have quickly raised alarms about potential threats to existing rights.
The election has sparked strong reactions from leaders within the community. Kelley Robinson, President of HRC, expressed both sorrow and determination: “We know our community is feeling scared and worried, but we are not backing down.”
Despite the overall outcome, there are notable victories. Sarah McBride’s election to Congress as the first openly transgender member represents a significant milestone. Her success, along with other groundbreaking wins in states like Iowa and Missouri, offers hope and visibility.
Project 2025: A Looming Threat
Advocacy groups are particularly concerned about Project 2025, which could dismantle protections under Title IX. Melanie Willingham-Jaggers from GLSEN warns that this initiative poses real risks to LGBTQIA+ youth, threatening their safety and well-being.
The path forward is challenging, but the community is moving. Vermont Rep. Becca Balint highlights the need for allies to stand boldly: “We need to do a better job of making the case that everyone deserves respect and dignity.”
Groups like GLAAD point out that most voters cared about the economy and prices, not social issues.
