Singer, songwriter, actor and LGBTQIA+ poster boy, Troye Sivan has offered a message of hope and comfort to queer youth who are currently facing a difficult time due to the rise of homophobic legislation around the world. In a recent interview with Elle magazine, Sivan spoke about the importance of representation in media and how it can help young people to feel less alone, reports Pink News.

The US is in a culture war and LGBTQIA+ people are the battleground

CNN reports that at least 417 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the United States since the start of the year. This is a record amount of policy being weaponised against queer minorities.

Troye told Elle about his own experience and how representation helps many feel less alone.

“Representation shows you that your immediate circumstances are not going to be your circumstances forever, that there are people out there who are going to love you and support you, and places where you can feel safe,” says Sivan. “It’s really attempting to send us backwards, but young people can go on TikTok or turn on the Grammys or watch music videos on YouTube and see themselves.”

Sivan came out at the start of his career, has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights.

“I feel hopeful when I see all the queer representation that’s accessible to younger generations now,” he said. “It’s so important for them to know that they are not alone and that there are people out there who love them and support them for who they are.”

Sivan’s message of hope and solace is a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and the impact it can have on young people’s lives. As the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights continues, voices like his are crucial in providing support and encouragement to those who need it most.
