Tom Blyth And Russell Tovey In “Plainclothes” Trailer Tease A Risky Romance
The first trailer for Plainclothes is here, and it puts two magnetic leads on a collision course. Tom Blyth plays Lucas, an undercover police officer sent to entrap men at cruising spots. Russell Tovey is Andrew, the older man who turns a sting into something far more complicated. The trailer premiered exclusively with Out, which also confirms the ensemble cast and cinema release date.

What the trailer shows.
We see Lucas pulled between orders and desire. Bathroom surveillance, loaded glances, and a jittery soundtrack keep the tension high. The official synopsis promises a New Year’s Eve reckoning as the secret relationship deepens and workplace pressure intensifies. The trailer lands a blunt line that sums up the arc: “I can’t hide anymore.”
Plainclothes is the feature debut of writer-director Carmen Emmi. The film is set in 1990s Syracuse, New York, and was inspired in part by Emmi’s hometown and family experiences. It premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast, with praise for performances by Blyth, Tovey, Amy Forsyth, Christian Cooke, Maria Dizzia, and Gabe Fazio.

Theatrical release is set for 19 September 2025 via Magnolia Pictures. Before that, the film screens at Queer Screen Film Fest (QSFF) at Event Cinemas George Street, Sydney, on Wednesday 27 August at 7:00 pm, as part of the festival running 27–31 August.
The trailer points to a film about desire under watchful eyes, and the cost of living a lie. It leans into shame, secrecy, and the pull of connection. Will you catch it at QSFF or wait for opening weekend in cinemas?
