Todd Haynes Teases New “Sexually Explicit” Project Starring Joaquin Phoenix
At the Deauville American Film Festival, director Todd Haynes revealed in an interview that he is planning his next directorial project about two men in love during the 1930s. He teased that Joker star Joaquin Phoenix will play a main role in the cast, reports Variety.
A Sexually Explicit Relationship
Director Todd Haynes recently presented his latest film starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore titled May December. The film loosely follows the true story of Mary Kay Letourneau and her illicit affair with her child student.
When asked about his next project that will feature Joaquin Phoenix, Haynes talked about it being a historical drama based around tow queer men. He revealed that the “sexually explicit” relationship will challenge audiences.
“One is a Native American character and one is a corrupt cop in LA. It’s set in the ’30s,” he says. “They have to flee L.A. ultimately and go to Mexico. But it’s a love story and with a strong sexual component.”
These little teaser details have already begun circulating and anticipation for the project is high. The film is still in its infancy though with a strong central idea yet no official title. The actor to play the Native American love interest has yet to be cast too.
Phoenix initially brought the idea to Haynes, and it was Phoenix who pushed for the film to explore more daring sexual themes. The movie is expected to receive an NC-17 rating which means it exceeds an R rating and promises very saucy content.
The project isn’t scheduled for release until at least 2024 due to casting and potential scheduling issues related to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Despite the wait, fans are eagerly anticipating the film.
