“There is no longer any room for homophobia today, not even in professional sport.” – Timo Cavelius

In a story reported by Outsports, Timo Cavelius, a 27-year-old German judoka, is set to make history as the first openly gay male athlete to compete in Olympic judo. Cavelius secured his spot on the German Olympic team after finishing second at a major meet in Kazakhstan in May 2024.

Cavelius has been openly gay since he was 15. He recalls his coming out as uneventful, despite a German tabloid wanting to sensationalise his story. “They dropped the topic because I couldn’t offer a sad or shocking story,” he shared in a 2020 interview with Outsports.

In a recent Instagram post, Cavelius reflected on the challenges of being an LGBTQIA+ athlete in Germany. He spoke about the difficulty of bringing his boyfriend to matches and pretending he was just a friend. “It was exhausting always acting as if I had a girlfriend,” he admitted.

Therapy and Self-Acceptance

Cavelius credits therapy for helping him embrace his identity. “Speaking to our sports psychologist about my sexuality was a pivotal experience,” he said. The psychologist didn’t push him but made it clear that the choice was his. This support helped him overcome his fears and come out to friends and family.

In the world of judo, many top athletes come from countries where being gay is not accepted. Despite this, Cavelius has earned respect from his competitors. “Some viewed me as weak, but they still accept me as a man and compete against me,” he noted.

“No Room for Homophobia”

Cavelius is a strong advocate for the power of coming out. “I don’t want to blame others for their problems, but many scare themselves about coming out,” he said. “The moment I took control of my destiny, nothing could harm me. There is no room for homophobia today, not even in professional sport.”

Eyes on the Prize

Cavelius will compete in the 81kg class on July 30 at the Paris Summer Olympics. With six matches in a day to win the gold, he’s ranked 21st in the world and in good shape for a deep run in the tournament. Regardless of the outcome, he has already made history.

Timo Cavelius’ journey is a testament to courage and self-acceptance. His story inspires many in the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond. As he steps onto the Olympic stage, he carries the hopes and dreams of many who see him as a beacon of strength and authenticity.
