The Titanique sails on! And with seamen like Trent onboard, we’re sold!

DNA: Trent, you are in the cast of Titanique, currently playing at The Grand Electric in Sydney, which has had its season extended to June! Tell us why you think audiences love this show.

Well… I think there’s comedy musicals and parody musicals and then there’s Titanique! It’s the perfect blend of the silliness of a comedy but with the absolute powerhouse talents and vocals of a mainstream musical. People are always so surprised after the show with the acting and voices because it’s a funny show, but they can go hand in hand with incredible writing and directing from Tye Blue and the Team. Plus, the show has been running for years in New York so they’ve really perfected the formula.

You play several roles in Titanique. Tell us about those, and which one is the most fun.

Yes! So I have my own on stage role of BGV3, which is my full time role but I also cover five other leads, which definitely keeps it interesting and fresh! Jack is a fun one to play because you really get to use your comedy acting chops but I also really enjoy the seaman/iceberg, which I can’t give away too much –  but it’s fierce.

The show has audiences laughing from beginning to end. Which jokes still makes you crack up?

There are so many. Two-hundred shows in, we know every single punch line from beginning to end, but it’s more about hearing the audiences’ reactions to certain jokes that tickles us the most. There’s a Grindr joke in the show that we all love to listen to the reaction to because usually that lets us know how many gays are in the audience that night.

We must mention your physical similarity to US gay comedian Matteo Lane. Do people say this all the time?

Okay, this is literally the first time I’ve ever heard this! I see the moustache vision, I do, but this is a first!

Do you have First Nations or Indigenous heritage?

Yes! I was born on Kamilaroi land, and I’m a proud Kamilaroi man.

You’re pretty good at the sexy Insta post! What tips do you have for us?

Well, thank you! Know your angles, know your good side, and have a friend who knows these as well for when they take the photos, also lighting can be a big factor.

The ’70s porn star ’stache! We love it. When did you grow it, why, and are boys hot for it?

The people love the ’stash! It actually started as a joke. I had a beard for a while, and I was about to start a new show and I had to shave, but I decided to come in to work the next day with a mo, as a joke, but the director loved it so much he made me keep it for the show and my character, which I went on to keep for my next three shows! Unfortunately, whenever I play Jack in Titanique I have to trim it down. It grows fast though!

Who is your celebrity crush?

Bad Bunny… also Bailey Smith could get it.

What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve been caught doing?

Probably getting caught putting tomatoes in as potatoes at Coles .

Is the world mostly kind or mostly cruel?

I think it wants to be kind but it’s run by so much cruelty. It’s hard to say.

On a scale of 1 to 10, where are you on the Camp-O-Metre?

I would say about a 2 or 3, but it can absolutely be turned up or down depending on where I am. I think that’s called code-switching.

Tell us about your best straight mate. Where did you meet, and what bonds you?

I have a few, actually! Some are from school, back when I was still “straight” and playing footy. I have my straight friends I’ve met in shows. Either way, they are all open-minded and the absolute best. Fun fact: we don’t have a straight male cast member in Titanique!

What’s the best thing about performing live?

The best thing is the audience and hearing the laughter when you hit the punch line. There’s truly no better feeling, plus Titanique in the funniest show in Australia, so if you miss one joke, there’s another one coming in the next few seconds. Also, singing Celine Dion songs every night, I would do that for free.
