Staged at @sohoplace in London, the 90-minute play paired Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges as Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar. Directed by Jonathan Butterell with music by Dan Gillespie Sells, the production leaned into the raw, messy parts of love and loss, with no interest in softening the edges.

Before Challengers, Faist Was Already Making an Impact
This was Faist’s project before the bisexual tennis feature film, Challengers, and some of the same emotional charge he brought to the tennis court was already visible on stage. Jack Twist, in his hands, wasn’t just yearning, he was urgent. Hedges played Ennis with quiet restraint, and together they created a dynamic that still feels alive in the footage.
The production may be over, but the interest isn’t
The production closed on 12 August 2023, but fans have been sharing clips, screenshots, and wide-eyed commentary ever since, with more surfacing around the 20th anniversary of the Brokeback Mountain film.

We’re not surprised it’s having a second life online. The stripped-back set, the in-your-face intimacy, and the casting of two rising stars made it feel immediate, like something you should have seen in person. And now, people are asking the right question: why didn’t this go further?

So, is it time to bring it back?
It’s rare for a short West End run to linger like this, but Brokeback Mountain clearly struck a nerve. A pro-shot would be welcomed. A revival, even more so. And if it does get picked up again, it deserves a wider stage.
Until then, we’ve got the clips. And they’re still doing what they did the first time—and we “can’t quit you”.
