Should we be scared of what’s outside?

Some kids fear the monster in the closet but when you’re not straight, the closet can feel like a safe place. It’s what’s outside that can be scary.

In the indie horror There’s A Zombie Outside, that monster may be real for Adam (Ben Baur from Hunting Season). He’s a struggling artist who loves scary movies.

The line between his love for pop culture and what’s real gets unclear. He starts seeing a zombie from one of his films outside. Sometimes it’s far away, but other times it’s right at his door.

It all kicks off when Adam goes on holiday with his partner, Ollie (Ty Chen from The Politician), and their friends, Louie (Francisco Chacin from Matlock) and Zeke (William Lott from Bottom). What should be fun turns into worry when Adam sees the zombie through the window.

Is this movie more than just a scare?

The writer-director, Michael Varrati (from The Fangoria Chainsaw Awards and Boulet Brothers’ Dragula), is also a horror fan. This story looks into his worries and curiosities.

Varrati said that horror films use monsters to mean so much more. He added that, yes, their movie is about a zombie but it’s also about how we deal with art and media. He continued that, sometimes, giving ourselves to this thing can make us monsters.

Baur also feels a connection to the story. He was excited to work on a project that talks about the queer community’s love for horror head-on.

Baur said the film isn’t just about the zombie, it’s about fighting to control and tell our stories. He hopes people see themselves in it and feel a little less alone.

Varrati’s There’s A Zombie Outside includes contributions from his past workmates and horror fans, with drag queen Peaches Christ (All About Evil) and Lori Cardille (Day Of The Dead). Also, Tiffany Shepis (Victor Crowley), Phylicia Wissa (Santa Clarita Diet), Julia Marchese (Burying The Ex), and Teri Gamble (Mrs. Davis) are in it.

The June Gloom Productions film was at festivals last year. Now, it will be on digital on March 4 from Gravitas Ventures.
