Thailand: Where Love Shines Brighter

When: Year-round destination; marriage equality in effect since January 2025
Where: Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan)
Website: Amazing Thailand

Thailand has always been known as the Land of Smiles. In 2025, it earned a new title.

In January, the country’s Equal Marriage Law came into effect, making Thailand the first nation in Southeast Asia to legalise same-sex marriage. The third in Asia after Taiwan and Nepal, Thailand now recognises marriage as a partnership between two people, full stop. Same-sex couples can legally register their unions, adopt children together, inherit from one another, and make medical decisions for their partners. The legal protections that straight couples have long taken for granted are now available to everyone.

Hundreds of couples registered their marriages on that first day. Bangkok Pride hosted a mass wedding event at Paragon Hall, with rainbow flags and confetti marking what Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra called a moment when “every love will be supported by the law.”

But the legal milestone, while historic, only formalises what many LGBTQIA+ travellers already knew: Thailand welcomes queer people with genuine warmth.

Bangkok has long been considered Asia’s queer capital. The Silom district pulses with rooftop bars, clubs, and drag shows that draw crowds from across the region. According to Amazing Thailand’s promotional materials, the capital is “alive with parades” and a nightlife scene that caters specifically to the community. The website lists Silom as one of the city’s key areas, noting its mix of business, hotels, and entertainment.

Head south to Phuket, and the vibe shifts to beach holidays and cabaret nights. Simon Cabaret, listed on the Amazing Thailand website, has been entertaining audiences for years with its extravagant shows. The island’s Paradise Complex and Freedom Beach are highlighted in Amazing Thailand’s LGBTQ+ marketing as spots where romance meets the sea.

Pattaya, a couple of hours from Bangkok, offers its own flavour. The website features Tiffany’s Show Pattaya, described as “the city’s original transvestite Cabaret Show, now in its 40th year.” Amazing Thailand’s promotional content also mentions BoyzTown and Jomtien Beach as places where the community gathers.

For those seeking something quieter, Chiang Mai delivers. The northern city is known for its temples, cafés, and annual Pride celebrations, according to Amazing Thailand’s marketing. The website describes Chiang Mai as rich in culture and surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and national parks.

The islands call too. Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, according to Amazing Thailand’s promotional materials, blend festivals with “joy, water, and rainbow spirit.” Both are listed on the website as romantic destinations with soft sand and warm water.

What makes Thailand different from other destinations isn’t just the venues or the legal framework. It’s the people. Amazing Thailand’s marketing describes Thai people as “gracious, kind, and open-hearted.” The country’s Buddhist culture has historically been more accepting of gender diversity than many of its neighbours, even before marriage equality became law.

That said, activists note there’s still work to be done. A gender recognition bill remains under discussion, and social attitudes don’t always match legal progress. But for queer travellers looking for a destination where they can hold hands on the beach, get legally married, or simply exist without hostility, Thailand offers something increasingly rare: a place where you can breathe.

The promotional tagline says it well: here, love is celebrated.
