When Teen Wolf first aired it became a smash hit for MTV. The series did its best to represent queerness without resorting to stereotypes and offensive B-plot storylines. The star of the show, Tyler Posey, came out as queer and sexually fluid in 2021 and credits his time on Teen Wolf with helping him come to terms with this, reports Attitude.

AHEAD OF ITS TIME

Although the series ended its run in 2017, the stars have managed to maintain a strong fanbase and the show has had many calls for a reunion. Fans had their prayers answered in 2021 when Teen Wolf: The Movie was announced. Tyler Posey will return with fellow cast members Holland Roden, Chrystal Reed, Tyler Hoechlin and Colton Haynes.

Speaking to Attitude, Posey says that Teen Wolf attracted an LGBTQIA+ audience because it was ahead of its time. “I watch it now as an adult and I’m like, ‘Wow, we were really ahead of the times.’ We were really inclusive and tried a lot of LGBTQ storylines,” he says. “It was like, ‘Look, this is normal. This is a part of everyday life.’ And we just tried to make it feel natural and normal, and I think that’s something that everyone gravitated to.”

Being part of a show that treated queer storylines with respect, Posey felt it was pivotal in his coming out journey. “The show definitely helped not let the subject die in my head. It was constantly there and it was constantly being accepted,” he says. “For me, it was easier to not be ashamed about what I was going through. I was just instilled with this idea of acceptance for who I am.”

Teen Wolf: The Movie will be available on Paramount+ from January, 27.
