Australia’s Eurovision representative for 2023 has been announced, and it’s none other than the Perth-based band Voyager. The group, known for their unique blend of progressive metal and electronic music, will take the stage in Liverpool to perform their song Promise, reports The Guardian.

COULD WE BE LOOKING AT AUSTRALIA’S FIRST WIN?

Voyager’s selection marks the first time an Australian metal band has represented the country at Eurovision. The band, which formed in 1999, has been a staple of the Australian music scene for over two decades and has gained a dedicated following worldwide for their innovative sound and captivating live performances.

According to The Guardian, Voyager has had Eurovision in mind since 2015. “Voyager has been determined to get centre stage for the biggest song contest in the world and SBS knows they will bring that grit with them along with a whole lot of fun,” says SBS head of entertainment, Emily Griggs.

Lead singer Danny Estrin explains that the music video for Promise was filmed in both Perth and parts of Western Australia to showcase the beauty of the state. “We filmed the music video in both the city of Perth and beautiful parts of Western Australia to showcase the majestic beauty of our home state,” he says.

Promise is a high-energy, synth-metal anthem with a soaring chorus and intricate instrumental sections. The song begins on a high with Estrin singing melodic lyrics backed by a synth beat that builds to a fast-paced rock instrumental crescendo. Promise heroes Estrin’s vocal talents while giving room for the medley of genre-bending guitar and keytar solos; it’s made for the Eurovision stage and will certainly make an impact.

Voyager will compete against acts from across Europe and beyond. The competition is set to take place in the UK, which is hosting on behalf of the 2022 winner Ukraine. The band is no stranger to international success, having toured extensively in Europe and Asia in recent years and earning critical acclaim for their last album, Colours In The Sun.

The competition takes off in May 2023 and Australia’s eyes will be turned towards Voyager’s performance with the hopes of a first win for Australia.
