Hundreds gathered at Paddington Town Hall in Sydney on Tuesday, 11 March, to farewell Maxi Shield, the drag performer and RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under contestant who passed away on 21 February following complications from cancer treatment. She was 51.

Born Kristopher Elliot in Ballina, New South Wales, Maxi had been performing drag for close to three decades. The memorial service was streamed live into her regular Oxford Street venues, including the Oxford, Stonewall, Universal and The Burdekin, so those who couldn’t fit inside the packed hall could still be part of it.

Purple stilettos and a standing-room-only crowd

A pair of Maxi’s purple stiletto heels sat on top of her coffin as friends, family, and fans filled every seat. Celebrant Nick Bone led the service, which swung between laughter and tears.

Drag sister Vanity delivered a eulogy reflecting on their years together. She told mourners that Maxi “would have declared today ‘bloody glorious'” and spoke about how next year would have marked their “pearl necklace jubilee” of 30 years performing together.

Fellow drag sister Tora Hymen also spoke, recalling late-night trips to Oporto after shows and saying Maxi had an “incredible ability to walk into a room and immediately make it brighter.”

“You were my soulmate.”

Maxi’s long-time partner, David, was visibly emotional as he spoke, telling the crowd she was “more than a partner.” He called Kris his “soulmate and companion.”

Singer Marney McQueen then performed Prince’s Purple Rain, a song closely tied to Maxi’s own performances, while photos and footage from her career played on screen. The casket was carried out to a remix of Madonna’s Like A Prayer before being placed in a hearse for one final trip down Oxford Street.

One last walk down Oxford Street

Members of the Sydney Convicts rugby club served as pallbearers as the hearse made its way along the strip. Crowds lined the footpath, waving rainbow flags, applauding, and throwing flowers as it passed. An after-party followed at The Beresford in Surry Hills.

The community itself funded the send-off. A GoFundMe campaign raised over $50,000, with more than $30,000 coming in within the first 24 hours.

A career that spanned decades and stages worldwide

Maxi’s resume speaks for itself. She performed at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics and opened the 2002 Gay Games. She competed on the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under in 2021, won four Drag Industry Variety Awards (DIVA Awards), and was named national hostess for Madonna’s Australian Rebel Heart Tour in 2016.

On the tour’s final night, she joined Madonna on stage for what would be the last “Unapologetic Bitch” performance worldwide, a moment captured on the official tour DVD. Closer to home, Maxi was also a regular performer at DNA’s pool parties, where her energy and humour made her a crowd favourite. She had also been cast in the upcoming Drag Race Down Under vs the World but had to turn it down due to her illness.

Maxi was honoured at the 2026 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade weeks before the memorial.

Vale, Maxi Shield.
