Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras Kicks Off Tonight With Ecstatica!
Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras officially kicks off today with the 2026 them, Ecstatica. Tonight’s opening moment is the raising of the Progress Pride Flag at Sydney Town Hall, marking the start of the festival run through to 1 March.

Ecstatica starts tonight
Jesse Matheson Mardi Gras CEO, frames Ecstatica as “euphoria as resistance”, arguing that joy can be both personal and political, especially when it’s shared in public and backed by community.

The festival itself has always sat in that space. It began as a protest march in 1978, and it still carries that history even as the program has grown into a packed season of parties, performance, talks and community-led events.

Where do you jump in first?
If you’re only picking one daytime event, start with Fair Day on Sunday 15 February at Victoria Park. It’s free, all ages, and designed as a big meet-up point for stalls, food, performances and community spaces. Check out the DNA market stall, where we’ll be selling our famous DNA Cover Boy tan tops, our Made That Way body oils and offering some fun subscription incentives!

Prefer a night option straight out of the gate? Ultra Violet lands tonight at City Recital Hall, while Black Cherry follows on 14 February at National Art School’s Cell Block Theatre, centred on trans and gender-diverse artists.

From stage stories to big debates
On 17 February, Lesbians Are Lovely! takes over Carriage Works with UNSW Centre for Ideas, working with Yves Rees and hosted by Mon Schafter.

Two major theatre picks sit inside the wider Mardi Gras window: Perfect Arrangement at New Theatre (running to 7 March) and The Normal Heart, presented by Sydney Theatre Company at the Sydney Opera House (running to 14 March).

The talkiest night on the calendar is the Mardi Gras Debate at the State Library of New South Wales on 19 February, in partnership with Sydney Writers’ Festival, adjudicated by Yumi Stynes.

Parade night and what the app can do
The Parade returns on Saturday, 28 February, running along Oxford Street, Flinders Street and Anzac Parade. Accessible viewing areas are again part of the plan, and Glitter Club returns at Taylor Square.

The official Mardi Gras app is being pitched as more than a program list this year, with updated safety and connection tools alongside maps and event info.
