Shia LaBeouf Says “Small Man Complex” Makes Him Homophobic Following Assault Allegations

Actor Shia LaBeouf faces serious legal trouble following an alleged altercation in New Orleans. The Transformers star was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor battery. The violent incident occurred at the R Bar on February 17, 2026. Witnesses and police reports indicate he hurled anti-gay slurs at three men before physically assaulting them. LaBeouf is now blaming his own insecurities rather than his documented struggles with alcohol.

What happened at the R Bar?

The assault took place during the festive Mardi Gras holiday, a local period known for parades and heavy partying. Venue staff reportedly asked LaBeouf to leave at around 12:45 in the morning. Instead of exiting peacefully, authorities allege he punched two men and head-butted a third. Reports confirm he repeatedly used the word “faggot” during the attack. One of the victims identifies as queer. Another dresses in drag.

A bizarre defence strategy

In an interview with Andrew Callaghan on the YouTube outlet Channel 5, LaBeouf tried to explain his actions. He dismissed the idea of returning to a rehab treatment facility.

“My behavior [is] bullshit. I gotta deal with that,” LaBeouf said. “Does that mean I gotta go to rehab again? I’m just not into it, bro.”

Instead, he offered a different excuse.

“I think I have a small man complex,” he told Callaghan. He added that his issues stem from anger and ego.

LaBeouf also made a surprising admission about the victims. “I’ll be honest with you, big gay people are scary to me,” he stated. He claimed the three men were touching his leg, causing him to panic. “I’m sorry, if that’s homophobic, then I’m that,” he admitted.

Currently, LaBeouf has posted a $100,000 bond. He also paid an additional $5,000 bail for a third battery charge. New Orleans Judge Simone Levine ordered him to undergo drug and alcohol testing at the courthouse. Levine noted the test results left her concerned. She stated the actor does not take his addiction seriously.

Legal experts are speculating whether LaBeouf will face enhanced penalties under a state hate crimes law. This legislation targets individuals who attack others based on actual or perceived sexual orientation. We will monitor the court proceedings closely as the case develops.
