FEATURED: Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade #Partnership
Saturday 2 March, the streets of Sydney were ablaze with the spirit of pride and diversity as the 46th annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade returned to Oxford St, Flinders St, and Anzac Parade.
An estimated 250,000 spectators gathered in unity and celebration, bearing witness to a spectacular march of more than 12,000 participants who lit up the night with their creativity, advocacy, and unapologetic pride.
“Sydney has always been a beacon for LGBTIQA+ communities and that pride is most spectacularly on show during Mardi Gras,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore.
Following a week of tension between the LGBTQIA+ community and the NSW Police Force, officers marching in the parade out of uniform were greeted with cheers.
There was a strong pro-Palestine presence in the parade, with a disruption by protesters who blocked the path of the Labor Party marching group, which promoted a swift response from NSW Police and the AFP, who removed NSW Premier Chris Minns and his party from the parade route at Taylor Square.
A group marching in support of the gay Jewish community were booed at several places along the parade route.
