Rugby Star Ian Roberts Transforms True Story Into Award-Winning Theatre

(Christian Scott)

A powerful new stage play by former rugby star Ian Roberts and Alex Broun has earned a major recognition in theatre. Their work, Into The Light, received the 2024 Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award, sharing the $20,000 prize.

A Story That Needs to Be Told

Award judge Terry Clarke described Into The Light as deeply moving and rooted in real-life events. At its core, the play explores Ian Roberts’ friendship with Arron, a young man he supported and cared for. Tragically, Arron was murdered just one day before he was set to testify as a Crown witness against a paedophile ring.

Clarke praised the play for its fearless honesty, calling it both “authentic and scarifyingly honest.” He highlighted its semi-documentary style, which avoids sensationalism while presenting a story of heartbreak, hope, and humanity.

While the narrative centres on Roberts’ perspective, it doesn’t shy away from confronting his flaws, which adds to its raw truthfulness. “It’s dramatic and cleverly theatrical, with a presentation that’s both horrible and heartwarming,” Clark added.

Shared Recognition

Into The Light shares the award with Ballkids by Melbourne playwright Olivia Satchell. Diana Simmonds, who chairs the award committee, noted this rare tie happened because both works showed outstanding merit.

Ian Roberts made global headlines nearly three decades ago when he became the first professional rugby league player to come out publicly in 1995 while still at the peak of his career. His courage broke barriers and paved the way for more openness in sport. Today, his influence extends beyond the field.

Earlier this year, Ian helped launch Qtopia Sydney, a museum dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the LGBTQIA+ community. As a co-founder and director, he continues to champion stories that matter. Qtopia opened its doors in February 2024 and has quickly become a cultural touchstone for the city.
