After his midterm win in California’s 42nd district, Robert Garcia has become the first openly LGBTQIA+ immigrant to hold a seat in Congress and, already, he isn’t pulling his punches. The 44-year-old Democrat is using his platform to take aim at right-wing conservatives saying, “I know what patriotism is. It isn’t Marjorie Taylor Greene screaming America First.”

Robert Garcia enters a Congress that’s deeply divided between progressives and conservatives. Identifying this division, Garcia has firmly made a stance with the progressives, reports Advocate. The newly minted US Representative has claimed on Twitter that he has already begun to “agitate” homophobes and MAGA camps and he isn’t prepared to stop.
In his speech thanking his supporters and constituents, Garcia talked about his definition of patriotism and it does not match that of many conservatives. “Patriotism is not about shutting our doors and our borders to people who need help,” he says. “Real patriotism is loving your country so much that you want to help the people in your country.”
Besides his earnest tone when discussing the gravity of American patriotism, Garcia has also demonstrated a lighthearted side, having mastered the meme. Many are appreciating his relatability and tongue-in-cheek realness on Twitter.
