On Thursday, November 10, Robert Garcia has been announced as the US Representative for California and will the first openly LGBTQIA+ immigrant to serve in Congress, reports NBC Los Angeles.

GARCIA WILL HEAD TO DC

Robert Garcia is the Democratic mayor of Long Beach, California and beat out his opponent, John Briscoe for the 42nd congressional district seat. Garcia is a Peruvian-born politician who immigrated to the US at age five with his mother and holds his political career as a proud achievement, reports NBC Los Angeles.

Having earned his citizenship, Garcia was inspired to enter office and became the youngest mayor in Long Beach history in 2014. He was also the first openly gay immigrant to hold this position, a title which he takes into office as a US Representative. Losing his mother to Covid drove Robert Garcia to make changes to help the community he advocates for so that others don’t have to suffer similar loss.

Robert Garcia is currently married to professor Matthew Mendez Garcia and runs on a platform that is deeply tied to community. “Hispanics are a community that loves our families, and that includes trans and LGBTQ people, but we must understand that if the Republicans win more seats in Congress, they will have more power to take away rights from women and gay people,” says Garcia.
