Rainbow Crows Welcome Izak Rankine Back To The AFL After Homophobic Slur Ban

Adelaide Crows player Izak Rankine is returning to the field. He steps back onto the grass following a four-match suspension from last season.

What led to the suspension?

Last September, the AFL handed Rankine a ban after he directed a homophobic slur at a Collingwood player. The incident sparked widespread disappointment among fans. Rankine stepped away from the game to reflect on his actions. He publicly apologised for the language he used.

“It was wrong, and I take full responsibility,” Rankine said.

He stated the time away gave him space to educate himself and understand the weight of his mistake.

Rebuilding trust with the community

The Rainbow Crows are the official LGBTQIA+ supporter group for the Adelaide team. Over the past six months, Rankine reached out directly to the organisation. He met with the group’s founder, Brett, to discuss the impact of his language and how to make amends.

Rankine did not apologise in private alone. In February 2026, he attended the Rainbow Crows season launch. He participated in a question and answer panel alongside female players Eloise Jones and Grace Egan. He used the event to speak openly with community members.

“I’m an open book right now. I just want to learn, understand, and create those connections with everyone and be more involved,” Rankine said.

Moving forward together

The Rainbow Crows have now publicly welcomed his return. The independent group released a statement ahead of the first home game this Friday. They noted a shared commitment to building a more inclusive future.

“Our focus this week is on supporting Izak as he returns to playing his best football for the club and the game,” said Rainbow Crows founder Brett.

The Adelaide Football Club is also taking concrete steps. They are partnering with diversity groups like Proud 2 Play and reviewing their inclusion strategies. The club will deliver mandatory face-to-face education across all levels of the organisation before the end of the financial year.

The dialogue between Rankine and the Rainbow Crows shows a practical approach to accountability. These recent actions point toward a positive change on and off the field.
