Queer Country Music Gets A New Voice With Chris Housman’s Authentic Sound
Chris Housman grew up in a small Kansas town, surrounded by country music. Playing guitar and fiddle in a family band, he dreamed of making it big in Nashville. But, as a gay man, he thought his place would be behind the scenes, not in the spotlight.
Everything changed in 2014 when Chris heard Kacey Musgraves’ songs Merry Go Round and Follow Your Arrow. These tracks challenged the norms of country music and gave him hope. “I was like, ‘Oh, you can say this type of stuff in country music?'” Chris shared with Rolling Stone. It was a revelation that maybe he could be himself and still make it in Nashville.
Fast forward ten years, and Chris has turned that hope into reality. His debut album, Blueneck, released in June, blends his love for country music with his queer identity. The album has caught the attention of many, especially with singles like Guilty As Sin, Laid Back, and Drag Queen.
In Drag Queen, Chris explores themes of self-expression and confidence, adding another layer to his bold narrative. These songs, featuring male love interests in their videos, have amassed hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube and gained support from CMT.
