Pete Buttigieg’s Induction Into LGBTQIA+ Political Hall Of Fame A Milestone For Our Community
Pete Buttigieg, the US Transportation Secretary, is set to receive a big honour. The Advocate reports that he’ll join the LGBTQIA+ Political Hall Of Fame next week. This will happen at a special event during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
“It’s a proud moment for our community,” Annise Parker, head of the LGBTQIA+ Victory Institute, told The Advocate.
The event will celebrate Buttigieg’s career in public service. He’s broken new ground for LGBTQIA+ people in American politics.
Many well-known faces will be there. Actor Zachary Quinto and comedian Dana Goldberg are on the list. Wilson Cruz, another actor, will also attend.
The event will shine a light on LGBTQIA+ people in government. This year, 17% of DNC delegates identify as LGBTQIA+. That’s up from 11.5% in 2020.
Elliot Imse from the Victory Institute shared with The Advocate, “Pete’s run for president changed our nation’s politics. It showed Americans are ready for a qualified LGBTQIA+ person in the Oval Office.”
A Family Affair
Chasten Buttigieg, Pete’s husband, shared his thoughts with The Advocate. “I’m very proud of Peter,” he says. “He’s faced big challenges as a public servant. But he’s never regretted being his true self.”
Chasten adds, “He always puts our family first in his work. We know the fight for equality isn’t over yet.”
The event will draw politicians from all over the country. Governors, members of Congress, and local officials are expected to attend.
Buttigieg joins a list of notable past inductees. These include Tammy Baldwin, the first out LGBTQIA+ US Senator, and Harvey Milk, California’s first out LGBTQIA+ elected official.
“I’m proud to be his husband and stand by him as he serves our country,” Chasten concludes.
