Dimitri Pavade, a French para-athlete, recently shared his experience of coming out as gay during the Paris 2024 Paralympics. The 35-year-old long jumper’s decision to be open about his sexuality has led to an outpouring of support and a touching message from a young student.

I didn’t expect so much impact

Pavade, who won silver in the long jump T64 category at the Tokyo Paralympics, posted on social media about his sexuality a month ago. He wrote, “Yes, I’m short, I’m mixed-race, I’m one-legged. And to top it off, I’m gay!” This brave step made him one of six openly gay or bisexual men at the Paris Paralympics, a record number for the event.

The athlete’s coming out has resonated with many people. He appeared on the cover of L’Equipe magazine and was invited to a popular French talk show, Quelle Epoque! During the show, Pavade revealed he had been planning to come out since he was 21 but waited until the Paris Games to make a bigger impact.

A journey of acceptance and support

Pavade’s path to this moment began on Reunion Island, where he was born. At 18, he lost his right leg in a workplace accident. He later moved to southwest France to study prosthetics, which led him to para-athletics and eventually the national team.

Before sharing his news publicly, Pavade told his sponsors. Their positive response encouraged him to go ahead. The athlete was touched by the many supportive messages he received afterward.

“If you meet Dimitri Pavade, say thank you to him”

One particularly moving response came from a 6th-grade student. Pavade recounted how a teacher approached him at an event in Toulouse, saying a young Muslim boy in her class had asked her to thank Pavade if she met him. This unexpected impact on a young person deeply affected the athlete.

Pavade hopes his openness will help others who are still hesitant to come out. He understands the fear of judgment and harassment that many LGBTQIA+ athletes face. For Pavade, family support has been crucial. He shared how his father’s unconditional love brought him to tears when he first came out.

The para-athlete’s story highlights the ongoing importance of visibility and acceptance in sports. It shows how one person’s courage can inspire others and create positive change.
