Orville Peck Trades Broadway For Big-Screen Action In “Street Fighter” Debut
Orville Peck is having quite a year. Fresh from his acclaimed, unmasked role as the Emcee in Broadway’s Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, the country music star is now set to make his feature film debut. He is joining the cast of Legendary Entertainment’s new live-action Street Fighter movie.
The 37-year-old artist, best known for his velvet baritone, fringe-covered mask, and country roots, has been cast in the upcoming live-action Street Fighter reboot. While the exact role is still under wraps, speculation is swirling that Peck may be playing Vega, the mask-wearing Spanish fighter with a flair for drama and a deadly claw.
From the Kit Kat Club to Capcom’s Coliseum
Peck’s Broadway run as the Emcee in Cabaret (which ends July 30) marked a rare moment: the singer ditched his signature mask onstage, showing his face publicly for the first time. Now, with the Street Fighter casting news confirmed by Deadline, fans are wondering, will the mask return?
If the Vega theory holds, it might. The character is a natural fit for Peck: mysterious, camp, and combat-ready, with just enough theatrics to keep things interesting. As Collider’s Chris McPherson put it, “Peck’s made a career out of mystery and theatrical flair. Now he’ll bring that same magnetism – and menace – to the big screen.”
The game behind the film
For the uninitiated, Street Fighter isn’t just another pixelated memory from your cousin’s PlayStation days. Launched in 1987 by Japanese gaming giant Capcom, it’s one of the highest-grossing game franchises of all time, with over 55 million copies sold worldwide. It centres around global martial arts tournaments and villains like M. Bison, who may be played by The White Lotus actor Walton Goggins, according to early rumours.
This isn’t Street Fighter’s first swing at the big screen. The 1994 version starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue. There was also a 2009 reboot (The Legend of Chun-Li) and several animated spin-offs. But with Minecraft’s movie adaptation raking in nearly a billion dollars, there’s clearly still room for pixel-to-screen reboots when done right.
Who’s involved and what we know so far
The film will be directed by Kitao Sakurai, best known for Bad Trip and The Eric Andre Show. Legendary Entertainment and Capcom are co-producing, but the scriptwriters and full creative team have yet to be named. Already announced cast members include Jason Momoa, Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, and Roman Reigns.
If Peck is indeed playing Vega, the character’s balance of elegance and ferocity makes this a smart move. And let’s be honest, who better to wear a mask and fight with claws than someone who’s built a career making that exact combo feel sexy?
Peck’s creative leap makes sense
Though Peck hasn’t commented publicly on the role, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him take this leap. In an interview with Paper, he said, “Everything has to grow and evolve… If you try to make something remain the same forever, that’s when you start making bad art.”
That’s the energy he’s bringing into this next chapter, and we’re here for it.
What’s next for Orville Peck?
After dropping Stampede earlier this year and conquering Broadway, Peck’s shift into film feels like a natural next step, but one that still keeps us guessing. Whether he’s playing Vega or not, the fact that he’s in the ring at all proves he’s not afraid of shaking things up.
