Orville Peck And The Wiggles Collab On “Friends Of Dorothy”

Children’s entertainers The Wiggles released their 63rd studio album, Wiggle Up, Giddy Up! on March 7. This new set blends their fun-for-kids style with country music, including a song called Friends Of Dorothy featuring gay country crooner, Orville Peck.

What’s the Tea on Friends of Dorothy?

The phrase “friends of Dorothy” is an old-fashioned, coded way of describing gay people. If you were asking if someone was gay, you would say, “Is he a friend of Dorothy’s?” It comes from a time when gay men were fans of Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz (1939), where she played Dorothy. Her friends were the lion, the scarecrow, and the tin man, and they were “read” as being gay.

But in the Wiggles’ world, Dorothy is, of course, their friend, Dorothy The Dinosaur. Rest assured, the double meaning is intentional.

Camp Lyrics for the Whole Family

Simon Wiggle kicks off the track with his deep voice: “Dorothy, what’s the tea? You’re a special friend to me.” Then Peck joins in with what might be the most camp line ever in a kids’ song: “Well, I’d heard that dinosaurs were fierce, but Dorothy girl, you are fierce!”

Can we talk about how bold this is for a kids’ group? The track winks at LGBTQIA+ culture while still being fun for all ages.

Dolly Parton and Dasha Join the Party

The album brings more star power, too. Country queen Dolly Parton sings on two tracks: Friends! and We Will Always Be Friends. Both songs focus on the bonds we form with others.

Rising country star Dasha leads the title track, Wiggle Up, Giddy Up!. It’s a fast-paced song that will get families up and moving.

“This is one of the most exciting projects we’ve ever been part of,” said Wiggles co-founder Anthony Field. “Country music is all about storytelling and connection, and combining that with The Wiggles’ fun and imagination felt like the perfect match. We can’t wait for families everywhere to hear these songs!”

Kids will want this album on high rotation and adults… will just have to put up with it!
