The Irrepressibles – The Past

The Irrepressibles is the creative guise of Jamie Irrepressible a composer-songwriter-producer who has become a powerhouse in the realm of alternative music, captivating audiences around the world.

Born and raised in Yorkshire, Jamie’s musical journey began at a young age. Immersed in the world of classical music and progressive rock, he found solace in composing instrumental pieces, laying the foundation for his future endeavours. In his teens, Jamie’s musical interests expanded, delving into rock while playing in various bands on guitar and later vocals.

In his twenties, after moving to London, his musical horizons widened. He attended dance music nights at Fabric, Heaven and raves in the forest, and drew inspiration from eclectic sources such as the KLF and The Sex Pistols. He embarked on a quest to challenge musical norms and redefine his sound. Initially returning to orchestral compositions and infusing them with avant-garde and art approaches to sound and performance, punk rebellion and the working-class tradition of storytelling, inspiring the name for his project The Irrepressibles.

In 2009, Jamie made his mark with the release of The Irrepressibles “baroque pop” debut album Mirror Mirror featuring his beautiful track about loss In This Shirt. Sophomore album Nude (2012) saw Jamie create an album focused on telling the homosexual story with broad appeal in the LGBTQIA+ bringing in electronic elements to his symphonic approach to composition and production with standout track Two Men In Love. Superheroes in 2021 followed a homosexual love story aiming to express the spirit of Berlin with early electronic, prog, jazz, and symphonic elements. The albums have thus far earned critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase.

Jamie’s artistic journey took a poignant turn in 2014 when he performed Two Men In Love at the UK’s first gay wedding, marking a significant moment in LGBTQIA+ history. This event was followed by his move to Berlin, where he immersed himself in the city’s rich electronic music heritage and started collaborating and touring with renowned artists, Röyksopp.

In 2022, The Irrepressibles’ track Most Beautiful Boy found a new audience as it became the soundtrack to Netflix’s hit series Young Royals, resonating with viewers worldwide and propelling the song to viral status on streaming platforms.

Jamie’s relocation to Manchester saw the release of the poignant Self Love And Acceptance EP in 2023, delving into themes of mental health and therapy.

As of 2024, The Irrepressibles have amassed over 270 million streams on Spotify and an astonishing 8.1 billion streams on YouTube, cementing his status as one of the most innovative and influential acts in contemporary music.
