NFL Star Trey McBride’s Record-Breaking Season Honours His Two Mums
Arizona Cardinals’ tight end Trey McBride is setting new records in the NFL, and his two mums couldn’t be more thrilled. As the first NFL player with same-sex parents, McBride’s achievements go beyond the field, reports Alex Reimer for Queerty.
He’s the first tight end to catch 12 passes in two back-to-back games. With 73 catches in just 12 games this season, he’s on track to beat his own Cardinals franchise record of 81 receptions.
McBride entered the NFL in 2022 with the Cardinals. His selection made NFL history as the first player with same-sex parents. Kate and Jen McBride raised him in rural Colorado during the 1990s, when same-sex parents were rare.
Breaking Records with Style
His talent speaks through numbers. Last year, he set the Cardinals’ record with 81 receptions as a tight end. This season, he’s already grabbed 73 catches in just 12 games. At this rate, he’ll break his own record.
The 25-year-old connects with his fans in meaningful ways. He sent his No. 85 jersey to a young supporter who also has same-sex parents. His note read: “I want you to know it is cool to have [same-sex] parents. I am here for you. We are in this together.”
Through the wins and the losses, there is one player on the #AZCardinals offense that continues to show up every single game.

More Than Just Sports
The Arizona Cardinals show strong support for inclusion. They sponsor the National Gay Flag Football League and invited the league’s commissioner, Joel Horton, to the 2022 NFL Draft.
McBride’s college, Colorado State University, also promotes inclusion. Kennedy McDowell, the only out player in Division 1 college football, plays there now.
The Arizona Cardinals show their commitment to inclusion by supporting the National Gay Flag Football League. McBride feels at home with the team, stating, “Everyone in this league has been amazing. It’s something that needs to be normal. It’s something that I’m very proud of”.
Looking Ahead
Despite being quarterback Kyler Murray’s top target, McBride hasn’t scored a receiving touchdown yet. But with his current form, that milestone seems just around the corner.
His mother Kate’s words from 2022 ring true today: “When your kid comes to you when they’re little and they say they want to be president, it’s ‘OK, hunny, that’s great.’ He wanted to play in the NFL, and he’s going to do it.”
McBride continues to excel both on and off the field, setting records and supporting inclusive spaces in professional sports.
