Mayor Eric Adams has signed Executive Order 32, which safeguards gender-affirming care. The move comes in response to the wave of legislation in 20 states across the country that seek to restrict or ban vital healthcare services for transgender minors, reports New York City official website.

Mayor Adams’ decision reinforces New York City’s longstanding commitment to advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community.

New York continues to be a “safe” state for LGBTQIA+ individuals

The recently signed Executive Order serves as a powerful statement against the relentless assault on LGBTQIA+ rights unfolding in several states. Not only does this order protect access to gender-affirming care, it prohibits any New York City resources from being used to prosecute, detain or investigate individuals who provide or receive this care.

In his official statement regarding Executive Order 32, Mayor Adams emphasised New York City’s unwavering dedication to defending the rights of its LGBTQIA+ residents. “As states across the nation continue their onslaught of attacks on our LGBTQIA+ neighbours, New York City is doing what we have always done — standing up for justice and against discrimination,” says Mayor Adams.

Gender-affirming care plays a crucial role in supporting the mental and physical well-being of transgender individuals, particularly minors, as they navigate their gender identity. Medical care includes hormone treatments, therapy, surgical interventions and other procedures. These treatments are transformative for transgender youth and often life-saving.
