As Pride Month gains momentum worldwide, a recent survey conducted by Ipsos Global Advisor has shed light on the growing number of individuals identifying as LGBTQIA+ across generations. The data collected indicates that a significant 9 per cent of the global adult population identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, or asexual, reports Advocate.

Slowly but surely, LGBTQIA+ people are feeling liberated enough to be open

According to the survey results, the breakdown of LGBTQIA+ identification is as follows: 3 per cent identify as lesbian or gay, 4 per cent as bisexual, 1 per cent as pansexual or omnisexual, and 1 per cent as asexual. These statistics illustrate the diverse spectrum of sexual orientations and identities embraced by individuals around the world, reports Advocate.

One intriguing aspect revealed by the survey is the significant generational gap in LGBTQIA+ identification. Gen Z, the youngest generation, shows a higher likelihood of identifying as bisexual, pansexual/omnisexual, and asexual compared to their older counterparts. The data indicates that Gen Z is twice as likely as Millennials and four times as likely as Gen Xers and Boomers to identify as each of these identities.

This finding suggests a growing trend of openness and acceptance among younger generations, as they explore and embrace a wider range of sexual orientations and identities. Ipsos also reports that their survey shows LGBTQIA+ visibility is trending upwards despite varying from country to country. Although queerness is more common in Spain, Latin America, Thailand and Anglophone countries, there is a lower recorded LGBTQIA+ visibility in Japan, South Korea, Turkey, and Eastern Europe.

These survey findings provide an optimistic outlook for the future, signalling a more inclusive and diverse global culture, but they also demonstrate the need for continued efforts and advocacy on behalf of LGBTQIA+ communities.

As Pride Month festivities continue, it is an opportune time to reflect on the progress made, while acknowledging the work that remains in creating a world that celebrates and embraces the full spectrum of human identities.
