Mpox Surge In Australia: Dozens Hospitalised As Cases Skyrocket
Mpox cases are on the rise in Australia. Since July, the country has seen a 570% increase in infections according to ABC News.
Since June 2024, New South Wales has reported 433 cases, with 26 people requiring hospital care. This surge has health officials on high alert, urging at-risk groups to get vaccinated.
Dr Kerry Chant, NSW’s Chief Health Officer has called the rapidly rising cases “extremely alarming” reported The Guardian. Most of those hospitalised either skipped the jab or only got one dose. On the flip side, fully vaccinated folks who caught mpox had milder symptoms and recovered faster.
Who’s at Risk?
While anyone can catch mpox, it’s mainly spreading through close skin-to-skin contact. The virus doesn’t discriminate, but certain groups are more vulnerable. Health officials are focusing on men who have intimate relations with men, sex workers, and their partners.
Free Vaccines Available
Here’s some good news: two free doses of the mpox vaccine are available for eligible groups, regardless of Medicare status. Those who’ve had their first shot can get the second dose after 28 days.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Small, pimple-like lesions

The Bigger Picture
Australia isn’t alone in this fight. The country has reported to surge of over 1000 mpox cases this year, with NSW accounting for 329 Victoria followed with 512 cases, and other states have reported smaller numbers
Michael Woodhouse, CEO of ACON, an LGBTQIA+ health organisation said: “Our communities have always stepped up to protect ourselves and our partners. Now’s one of those crucial times.”
As Australia grapples with this outbreak, the message is clear: get vaccinated if you’re eligible, stay informed, and look out for each other. It’s a community effort to keep everyone safe and healthy.
Remember, health is a community effort. Let’s look out for each other and keep Australia safe.
