Mike Maimone’s Uplifting Song Began As A Voicemail To His Late Husband

Music often gives voice to feelings that words alone cannot capture. Singer, songwriter, and pianist Mike Maimone knows this well, channelling deep personal experience into his latest work. He recently released a new track, offering a glimpse into an upcoming album born from love and loss.

A Song Born From Anticipation

The single, On My Way, dropped last month and carries an upbeat energy despite its poignant backstory. It serves as the introduction to Maimone’s forthcoming LP, Guess What? I Love You. This album stands as a heartfelt tribute to his late husband, the renowned PR figure Howard Bragman. The song itself began life uniquely, conceived during the couple’s long-distance relationship.

Maimone shared the origin story, telling Instinct recently, “We were always hopping planes to see each other. Just before one trip, I called him with guitar in hand and sang this little ditty that was running through my head about how excited I was to see him. He didn’t pick up, so I left it as a voicemail. He told me it was fun and catchy and encouraged me to turn it into a full song.” That voicemail evolved into the finished track, complete with handclaps and stomps that capture the excitement of reunion.

An Album Of Two Halves

On My Way sets the stage for Guess What? I Love You, an album exploring the journey of falling deeply in love and the heartbreak of losing that love too soon. Maimone has structured the record thoughtfully, reflecting these contrasting emotions. Side A is dedicated to the blossoming romance, while Side B navigates the path through grief and healing after Bragman’s passing.

Creating this album became a way for Maimone to process profound loss. It documents not just a relationship, but also the resilience found in facing sorrow and choosing to celebrate love. Through this deeply personal project, he shares a story many understand: the enduring power of connection and the role creativity plays in navigating life’s toughest moments. Could music be a key to unlocking healing for others too? This album suggests it might be.
