Michigan Representative Attacks Gay Marriage Rights But Attorney General Stands Strong
A Michigan state representative caused a stir on social media with his views on marriage rights. Republican Josh Schriver from Oxford shared his thoughts on X about wanting to reverse current marriage laws.

This is not remotely controversial, nor extreme.
His statement came 27 days after Republicans won back control of the state House and 30 days before their majority takes office.
Current Legal Status
The 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision protects marriage rights nationwide through the 14th Amendment’s due process and equal protection clauses. As Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the ruling: “No longer may this liberty be denied.”

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel responded on X: “Please explain how dissolving my marriage, or that of the hundreds of thousands of other same-sex couples living in America, provides a benefit to your constituents or anyone else.”
Representative Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor) stated on social media: “This is definitely both controversial and extreme, along with anti-family. I grew up believing I’d never be able to get married and I’m not going back.”
Political Background
When asked by The Detroit News about his position, Schriver cited Bible passages, stating “Jesus defines marriage as between a man and a woman.” He noted the Supreme Court has “the power to overturn a past ruling.”
The current Supreme Court composition shows a 6-3 conservative majority, different from the 2015 court that made the original ruling.
Schriver won his district with 68% of votes in November. Earlier this year, Michigan House Speaker Joe Tate removed Schriver’s office staff, budget, and committee assignment after he shared controversial social media posts.
