Melbourne’s Gay Games Dream Crashes After Government Snub
ABC News reports that Melbourne has ended its campaign to host the 2030 Gay Games. The decision came after the state government chose not to provide financial support for this major sporting event.
The Victorian capital made it to the shortlist earlier this year. The Games, held every four years, welcomes all athletes without qualifying requirements. Participants cover their own costs, similar to a community-focused Olympics.
Justine Dalla Riva, who led Victoria’s bid advisory committee, said they needed only “low millions” in government funding. The event would have brought 10,000 participants to compete in 25 sports.
Julie Williams, a committee member and nine-time Games participant, had to cancel her trip to Washington DC in October. She was set to present Melbourne’s bid to the Federation of Gay Games.
“I am shattered,” Williams told ABC News.
Malcolm Campbell, president of Melbourne Frontrunners and Games participant since 2002, broke down the numbers. “The Games are funded by the athletes themselves,” he said. The government’s contribution would have been $2-3 million, far less than other major sporting events.
Victoria’s Deputy Premier Ben Carroll pointed to other local events like the Midsumma Festival and Pride March. “This was always just an expression of interest process,” he said.
Tourism Minister Steve Dimopolous had earlier shown confidence when Melbourne and Perth were both shortlisted. “I love Perth, but seriously it’s Perth,” he said.
The decision leaves many wondering about missed opportunities for Melbourne, known as Australia’s sporting capital, to host this inclusive international event.
It’s official. Just 3 cities remain in the running to host Gay Games XIII in 2030. Next stop will be October 2025 when we will be deciding our host city for the event. Where do you want to see the Games in 2030? pic.twitter.com/pHAEsO4a7x
