Comedy star remains hopeful and grounded as she begins cancer treatment.

Australian comedy legend Magda Szubanski has revealed she’s facing a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. In a candid update shared to her social media on Wednesday, the Kath And Kim actor confirmed the diagnosis with her usual mix of honesty and humour.

As reported by news.com.au, Szubanski, 64, has been diagnosed with a rare lymphoma. The form of cancer, which affects the lymphatic system, is known to progress rapidly.

In a short video message, Szubanski appeared with a shaved head, explaining, “The head is shaved in anticipation of it all falling out in a couple of weeks.”

She continued, “I have just been diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive lymphoma. It’s one of the nasty ones, unfortunately.”

Despite the confronting nature of the illness, Szubanski says she feels supported and safe in capable hands. “The good thing is I’m surrounded by beautiful friends and family and an incredible medical support team. Honestly, we have the best in the world here in Australia,” she said.

Still Finding Laughter in the Chaos

It’s no surprise the beloved performer is meeting this moment with humour and resilience. “It’s pretty confronting. It is a full-on one. But new treatments keep coming down the pipeline all the time … I’ve just got to [laughs],” she said, acknowledging both the fear and absurdity of the situation.

She also asked followers to keep a safe distance: “Please keep a distance, though, because I will be very immunocompromised. So, as I can’t hug no more.”

A Legacy of Strength and Wit

Best known for her role as Sharon in Kath And Kim, and for standout appearances in Babe and Ride Like A Girl, Szubanski has been part of Australia’s pop culture fabric for decades. Her openness, both on and off screen, has earned her deep respect across generations.

Though the diagnosis is serious, Magda’s outlook remains steady. She described her approach to recovery as “hopeful”— a word that sums up her spirit perfectly.

At DNA, we’re sending all our love to Magda during this time.
