Since the Supreme Court made the decision to repeal Roe Vs Wade in June 2022, President Joe Biden has been spearheading a campaign to get the federal Respect For Marriage Act, which protects same-sex marriage recognition, codified.

On Wednesday, December 14, President Biden formally signed the act into law in front of thousands of Americans at the White House where LGBTQIA+ icons Sam Smith and Cyndi Lauper performed to honour the historic moment, reports ABC News.

“AMERICANS CAN NOW LOVE WHO WE LOVE”

The Respect For Marriage Act is bipartisan legislation that has been worked on with key members of congress to land on fair and equal marriage protections. Senator Tammy Baldwin and Senator Susan Collins are the co-sponsors of the act and have worked to facilitate conversations between the left and the right to pass the law.

Addressing those in attendance at the White House on Wednesday, President Biden said, “Marriage is a simple proposition. Who do you love? And will you be loyal to that person you love? It’s not more complicated than that. The law recognises that everyone should have the right to answer those questions for themselves.”

To mark the momentous occasion, UK singer Sam Smith and LGBTQIA+ icon Cyndi Lauper performed for audiences. Lauper performed True Colours and says, “Well, this time love wins. We can rest easy tonight because our families are validated and because now we’re allowed to love who we love, which sounds odd to say, but Americans can now love who we love.”

Sam Smith performed Stay With Me.
