What makes someone truly iconic? Is it their talent, their resilience, or the way they navigate life’s most challenging moments? For Liza Minnelli, it’s all of these and more. Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, directed by Bruce David Klein, takes us on an intimate journey through the life of a performer who became a legend.

This documentary focuses on the 1970s, a decade that shaped Liza’s career and personal life. It was a time when she faced unimaginable loss while forging her path in the entertainment world. Through rare footage and candid interviews, the film reveals the complexities of Liza’s life – her triumphs, her struggles, and the extraordinary people who helped her along the way.

Liza Minnelli was born into Hollywood royalty. Her mother, Judy Garland, was one of the most celebrated performers of all time, known for her unforgettable role in The Wizard Of Oz and her powerhouse voice that could bring audiences to tears. Her father, Vincente Minnelli, was a visionary director behind classics like Meet Me in St Louis and An American In Paris.

Growing up with such legendary parents meant Liza was destined for greatness but it also came with immense pressure. The documentary doesn’t shy away from exploring how their influence shaped her career and personal identity.

Strength and Vulnerability Can Coexist

The 1970s were pivotal for Liza Minnelli. When Judy Garland passed away in 1969, Liza was just 23 years old. But instead of retreating, Liza leaned into her craft. This was the era when she sought guidance from some of the most influential figures in entertainment: Kay Thompson, Fred Ebb, Charles Aznavour, Halston, and Bob Fosse.

The documentary doesn’t shy away from the contradictions that defined Liza. She was both privileged and struggling, strong yet vulnerable. Her life was a tug-of-war between towering expectations and the very human need for connection and understanding. And it’s this friction, this push and pull, that fueled her meteoric rise and cemented her place in entertainment history.

A Portrait as Complex as Liza Herself

What sets this film apart is its authenticity. Featuring interviews with Michael Feinstein, Mia Farrow, Ben Vereen, Joel Grey, and even the late Chita Rivera, it paints a vivid picture of Liza’s life.

The Hollywood Reporter has called it “a gorgeous portrait,” while Variety describes it as “scintillating.” But perhaps The Wrap says it best: “Truly terrific.” This isn’t just a film for fans of Liza Minnelli; it’s for anyone who has ever faced adversity and come out stronger on the other side.

The film was released last week in New York on January 24 and Los Angeles on January 31 before rolling out nationwide, this is one cinematic experience you won’t want to miss.
