Leaked Chats Show Young Republican Leaders Trading Racist And Homophobic Slurs And “I Love Hitler” Comments

Leaders in the Young Republicans, the youth wing of the Republican Party, which currently holds power in the US Congress, were worried their private chats might leak. They should have worried more. A trove of 2,900 pages of messages from the encrypted app Telegram, obtained by journalist Jason Beeferman of POLITICO, has exposed what a new generation of conservative activists says when they think no one is watching.

The conversations, spanning seven months, show a group of people comfortable with racist, antisemitic and violent jokes about gassing political opponents, lauding slavery, and casually discussing rape.

A look inside the echo chamber.

The chat group, named the Restoreyr War Room, was a space for Millennial and Gen Z party members from New York, Kansas, Arizona and Vermont to campaign for control of the national Young Republican organisation. But campaign strategy often gave way to disturbing rhetoric.

Peter Giunta, then chair of the New York State Young Republicans, wrote that anyone voting against him in an upcoming election was going “to the gas chamber.” When another member joked about fixing the showers to fit the “Hitler aesthetic,” Giunta replied with a laughing emoji.

In another exchange about a right-wing candidate, Giunta wrote, “Great. I love Hitler.” Bobby Walker, the vice chair of the same New York group at the time, described rape as “epic.”

Meanwhile, William Hendrix, the Kansas Young Republicans’ vice chair, used variations of a racial slur more than a dozen times.

The fallout was swift.

Once POLITICO began its inquiries into the chat, the consequences were immediate. Hendrix was no longer employed in the Kansas Attorney General’s office. A campaign job offer for Walker was rescinded. Senior New York Republicans, including Representative Elise Stefanik and state Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt, publicly condemned the messages. Ortt called the comments “indefensible” and said they have “no place in our party.”

It’s a game of thrones, but with slurs.

The leak also revealed a bitter internal power struggle. Giunta claimed the release of the messages was a “highly-coordinated year-long character assassination” led by a rival, Gavin Wax. He alleged the chat logs were obtained through extortion and possibly doctored.

Despite this, Giunta apologised for the “insensitive and inexcusable language.” Walker also issued an apology, stating, “The language is wrong and hurtful,” and called it a “painful lesson about judgment and trust.” The finger-pointing shows a factional war that has now exploded into public view.

Texts and reactions from Young Republicans.

The numbers don’t lie.

This was not a case of a few poorly judged jokes. An analysis of the messages shows that slurs were a common part of the group’s vocabulary. Epithets like “f—-t,” “retarded,” and “n–ga” appeared a combined total of more than 251 times.

The chat members targeted nearly every minority group, from Black people, who were called “monkeys,” to Jewish people and Asians. The sheer volume makes it clear this was an accepted part of the group’s culture. They knew their words were toxic. As Walker himself wrote in one moment of clarity, “If we ever had a leak of this chat we would be cooked fr fr.” He was right.
