Lauren Boebert’s Homophobic “Chest-Feeding” Jab At Pete Buttigieg Sparks Outrage
Republican Lauren Boebert is under fire for a homophobic comment aimed at US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who is a gay dad.
Buttigieg and his husband Chasten made history in 2021 when Pete became the first openly gay US cabinet member. The couple are proud fathers to twins Joseph August and Penelope Rose, whom they adopted in 2021.
The controversy started when Boebert took credit for funding a $51.4 million bridge project in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Buttigieg called her out, saying the project was chosen on its merits and funded through President Biden’s infrastructure package, which Boebert voted against.
“Mayor Pete, maybe you were out chest-feeding and missed my letter”
Boebert fired back with a tweet: “Mayor Pete, maybe you were out chest-feeding and missed my letter, but I personally wrote you about this in June 2022.”
“Chest-feeding” is a term used by some transgender men, non-binary, and gender-non-conforming people to describe feeding their children with their own milk. Boebert’s use of the term to mock Buttigieg has been widely condemned as homophobic.
Twitter users were quick to call out Boebert’s hypocrisy, with one sharing CCTV footage of her fondling her date during a showing of the musical Beetlejuice. Others pointed out the importance of skin-to-skin contact for all parents, especially those with adopted children.
Boebert, who is seeking re-election in Colorado’s more conservative 4th district, was also recently criticised for attending Donald Trump’s hush-money trial in New York while skipping her own teenage son’s court appearance. Some sarcastically hailed her as “mother of the year.”
