Kenya Faces $7.8 Billion Economic Loss If Homophobic Bill Passes

Homophobia Is Bad For The Bottom Line – Kenya Could Find Out The Hard Way

A new study shows that Kenya faces serious money problems if it passes its anti-gay bill. The bill could hurt the country’s wallet in big ways and might create more problems than solutions.

The Real Cost of Discrimination in East Africa

A report by Open For Business, a charity from Britain, found that Kenya might lose up to $7.8 billion per year if it passes a planned anti-gay law. This same group also said Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda are already losing about $5 billion each year due to rules against LGBTQIA+ people.

“The economic fall-out from discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people is very real,” states the Open For Business report. This shows how social policies can affect a country’s money.

Colonial Laws, Modern Consequences

Gay sex is illegal in Kenya due to an old law from colonial times, but this law is not used much now. Kenya has been seen as a better place for LGBTQIA+ people compared to other countries in that part of Africa.

The draft Family Protection Bill wants to bring harsh punishments. It calls for up to 50 years in jail for gay relations. So far, the bill has not been talked about in parliament.

A Safe Haven Under Threat

Why is this bill coming up now? Much of the push comes from religious groups and politicians who want to win votes. They feed on old fears and wrong ideas.

At DNA, we ask: Does Kenya want to give up billions of dollars to please a few loud voices? The math doesn’t add up.

The Economic Numbers Behind Human Rights

The $7.8 billion loss would hurt many parts of Kenya’s economy. This includes tourism, foreign aid, and business. Companies often don’t want to put their money in places that pass such laws.

The study looks at the real cash effects of such laws. It’s not just about rights. It’s about food on tables, jobs, and Kenya’s place in the world market.

Countries that pass anti-LGBTQIA+ laws often see drops in tourism, cuts in aid, and fewer new businesses. Kenya risks all this if it moves forward with this bill.

This shows how rights and money are tied together. When a country treats all its people well, the whole nation does better.
