Keith Urban Confuses Fans With Queer Anthem For Trump At Mar-a-Lago
We have seen some odd headlines in 2025, but Keith Urban playing a Chappell Roan hit for Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago might be the strangest yet. The country star performed at a private event in Florida recently and included Pink Pony Club in his setlist.

The song is a massive queer pop anthem. It celebrates finding your chosen family at a gay bar. Yet Urban sang it to a room full of conservative donors.
The performance that confused the internet.
Australian billionaire Anthony Pratt hosted the exclusive bash at the Mar-a-Lago club on November 15. President-elect Donald Trump was in attendance. He sat right near the front. Pratt has been a major supporter of the Trump administration. He reportedly donated $10 million to the 2024 campaign. He also pledged $5 billion to support American business.
But the entertainment was the real talking point. Urban took to the stage with his acoustic guitar. He belted out lyrics about dancing in heels and being a “pink pony girl”.
The internet reacted immediately. Fans were baffled. Many called the performance “tone-deaf”. Others wondered if the irony was intentional. Was Keith trolling the room? Or did he just like the melody? We may never know for sure. But imagining a room of MAGA supporters swaying to a song about West Hollywood queer culture is quite the stretch!
Why this song choice is so ironic.
Chappell Roan wrote Pink Pony Club about The Abbey, a legendary gay bar in West Hollywood. The lyrics describe leaving a small town to embrace your true self on the dance floor. It is explicitly about queer liberation.
Roan herself is an outspoken critic of the President-elect. She famously paused a concert in Los Angeles last month to criticize ICE. She has not responded to the news yet. However, her fans are furious. One tweeted asking how he could play a queer song for that specific crowd. Another suggested Roan would never approve.
Keith has always loved the track.
To be fair to Urban, he has praised the song before. He is not playing it just for this crowd. He has covered it at his own concerts recently.
He spoke about the track in a previous interview. Urban said he “almost cried” when he first heard it. He explained why he connected with the message.
“Who doesn’t wanna find a safe place, wherever that is?” Urban said. “You just wanna find your people. Somewhere where you finally realise you belong there. God, that speaks to me.”

A turbulent year for the country star.
This performance comes at a difficult time for Urban personally. His wife of 19 years, Nicole Kidman, filed for divorce on September 30. The split followed their separation earlier in the year.
At DNA, we love a good cover version, but this specific context makes us scratch our heads. It is hard to imagine the audience at Mar-a-Lago connecting with the struggle of a young LGBTQIA+ person finding community in West Hollywood.
Did they listen to the lyrics? Did they know what the song was about? Or did they just enjoy the acoustic guitar? And what does Chappell Roan think about all this?
