Kamala Harris Picks Tim Walz as Running Mate: “We Are Going To Win”
Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for US president, has chosen Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, as her running mate for the upcoming November election. This decision comes after much speculation about who Harris would select to challenge Donald Trump and his vice-presidential pick, Ohio senator JD Vance.
Who is Tim Walz?
Tim Walz first entered politics in 2006, winning a seat in a Republican-leaning congressional district. He held that seat until he became the governor of Minnesota in 2018, winning re-election in 2022. Under his leadership, Minnesota has seen progressive changes, including universal school meals, legalised marijuana, abortion protections, and gun control measures.
Before politics, Walz was a high school geography teacher in Mankato, Minnesota. He also served in the Army National Guard for 24 years. His background in education and military service adds depth to his political career.
A True Ally
Harris opened with a story about Walz’s dedication to being an ally. Walz’s strong record on LGBTQIA+ rights is noteworthy and likely a factor in his selection as Harris’s running mate for the 2024 presidential election. Walz, the Governor of Minnesota, has a long history of supporting LGBTQIA+ rights, dating back to 1999 when he helped start his high school’s first Gay-Straight Alliance as a teacher.
His advocacy continued during his time in Congress, where he co-sponsored the repeal of the Defense Of Marriage Act and consistently voted in favour of LGBTQIA+ rights. As Governor, Walz has taken significant pro-LGBTQ actions, including banning conversion therapy, enacting laws to make Minnesota a “sanctuary state” for transgender individuals seeking gender-affirming care, and signing legislation to protect LGBTQIA+ rights and prohibit discrimination. LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups have celebrated Harris’s choice of Walz as her running mate, praising his proven record of support for the community.
“It’s Personal”
In an Instagram post, Harris praised Walz’ dedication to middle-class families. She shared how his upbringing in Nebraska, relying on social security survivor benefits after his father’s death, shaped his values. Walz used the GI Bill to attend college, coached high school football, and advised the high school’s gay-straight alliance. Harris emphasised that his personal experiences inform his governance.
Harris also noted Minnesota’s legislative achievements under Walz, such as a law protecting abortion access and universal background checks for gun purchases. She also admired his deep commitment to his family.
Walz responded on X, expressing his excitement about the partnership with Harris. He likened it to the first day of school, full of promise and potential. His straightforward, Midwestern charm has made him a popular figure, and his retorts against Trump have gained national attention.
Walz has been vocal about Trump’s policies and behavior. In a TV interview, he called Trump “weird,” criticising his policies that endanger women’s lives and threaten constitutional values. Walz’ candid remarks have resonated with many voters.
Growing up in small-town Nebraska, Walz understands rural America. His ability to connect with voters in the Rust Belt is seen as a significant asset. His former colleagues praise his knack for explaining Democratic policies and contrasting them with Republican actions.
Harris and Walz are expected to receive a warm welcome at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on 19 August. Endorsements from Barack Obama and Bill Clinton have bolstered Harris’ campaign. A recent New York Times/Siena College poll shows Harris narrowing the gap with Trump, trailing by just 2%.
Republicans have already started attacking Walz, labelling him a “radical leftist.” The Trump campaign called him a “west coast wannabe” and criticized his policies. Despite these attacks, Harris and Walz remain focused on their campaign.
JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, congratulated Walz but also criticized his record. The political battle is heating up as both sides prepare for the upcoming election.
