Josh Cavallo is getting married. The footballer, who came out as gay in 2021 while playing top-flight football in Australia, has confirmed he and fiancé Leighton Morrell will wed in 2027. He shared the news in an exclusive interview with Attitude at the 2026 Attitude Pride Awards Europe.

“It’s looking like it’s going to be next year, which is really exciting for Leighton and me,” Cavallo told Attitude. The couple have been planning the day for a while, and he is keeping the finer points quiet.
“We don’t want to give too much away because there’s some special stuff coming,” he said. So when is the big day? 2027, and that is about all he is willing to share for now.
A Proposal on the Pitch
Cavallo and Morrell got engaged in 2024. The footballer dropped to one knee on the pitch at Coopers Stadium, Adelaide United’s home ground, then posted the moment to social media. Morrell, an electrician, said yes. Two years on, the date is finally in sight.
The couple moved to the UK in 2025, the first club switch of Cavallo’s career. He now plays for Stamford AFC in the Southern League, following a short stint at Peterborough Sports. The response has caught him off guard.
“Coming from Australia, there was a lot of uncertainty about walking down the street,” he said. “The reception has been quite phenomenal. A lot of people have acknowledged us as well and told us about their own journeys and stories.”
Cavallo remains a rarity in his sport. As of early 2026, PinkNews counted just five openly gay male professional footballers in the world, and he is one of them. That visibility is part of why his happiness carries weight well beyond the scoreline.
He says life abroad has beaten expectations, and the pair are in no hurry to leave. “We’re very happy here and we’re looking to stay longer,” he said.
