Joel Kim Booster Talks 200+ Person Hookup And Public Fun On “Finding Fire Island”

(Searchlight Pictures)

Writer and star of the 2022 rom-com Fire Island has talked about his wildest experiences on the popular gay hotspot. Joel Kim Booster appeared alongside co-star Matt Rogers to discuss what, and who, he has done while visiting Fire Island and how it may have influenced the writing of his film, reports Q News.

The tea in question

Joel Kim Booster wrote Fire Island after a trip to the gay holiday spot with Bowen Yang. He reportedly brought along a copy of Pride And Prejudice which formed his future screenplay. “I brought Pride And Prejudice with me,” Booster tells Vanity Fair. “I was reading it there with Bowen, and it just sort of clicked for me… I turned to Bowen and was like, ‘I should write Pride And Prejudice set on Fire Island. Wouldn’t that be so funny?”

Fire Island came out to much fanfare for its honest and charming portrayal of what happens on the island. On the Finding Fire Island podcast, Booster elaborated on experiences he’s had which also helped round out his ideas for the film.

“I’ve been to a 200+ person orgy on the island, and there’s nothing like watching a bunch of guys get railed as the sun is coming up over the ocean,” he says. “The amount of sex and sex acts that I’ve seen on that island in public, in front of an audience, is sort of wild. I don’t know what it is about Fire Island that unlocks people’s inhibitions a little bit.”

Co-star Matt Rogers also elucidated his colourful experiences. “There was also a time I ate ass on the beach and then got really sick,” he says. “It’s so funny because you’re like, ‘Wow, I’ve never felt so alive,’ and then I’ve never felt so dead.”
