“It’s The Way God Made Me”: American Idol Singer David Archuleta Talks About His Faith And Sexuality

Just days after coming out as queer, American Idol contestant David Archuleta discussed his struggles with his sexuality on Good Morning America and how his faith impacted how he came to terms with his identity, reports Entertainment Weekly.
Archuleta came runner-up in American Idol‘s seventh season and was only 17 at the time of filming. Being raised Mormon, the now 30 year-old singer discussed trying to pray away his feelings in the past.
Archuleta says he would think, “Please take these feelings away from me, because I don’t want to feel things that I shouldn’t, I don’t want to feel things that would be wrong.”
“I’ve had to learned how to love myself even though I don’t understand why I am the way I am, but to learn that that’s how God has created me, and I have to discover that,” says Archuleta.
The singer had posted to Instagram on June 13, 2021 and openly expressed how he’d been confused about his sexuality for some time, and he called for compassion towards the LGBTQIA+ community. “There are people experiencing the same feelings of being LGBTQIA+ who are wrestling to follow their beliefs that are so important to them, just as I have. I just invite you to please consider making room to be more understanding and compassionate to those who are LGBTQIA+,” says Archuleta.
