It’s Over: Gus Kenworthy And Actor Boyfriend Matthew Wilkas Split
Their kiss was the highlight of the 2018 Winter Olympics but, sadly, freestyle skiing champ Gus Kenworthy and his actor beau Matthew Wilkas are “taking time apart” according to a PR statement from their representative.
The split has been described as amicable and respectful.
Gus and Matt started dating in 2015 after Gus sent a DM to Matt’s Instagram account.
“He said he really liked my sense of humour and thought I was funny, and I thought, ′Who is this guy?’ I didn’t know what free-skiing was,” Matt told Out magazine in 2016.
In 2018, Gus and US figure skater Adam Rippon attracted media attention being the first openly gay male athletes to compete at a Winter Olympics. An un-staged, impromptu kiss shared between Gus and Matt captured in NBC’s Olympic broadcast caused a media sensation, with Outsports describing it as “the gay sports moment of 2018”.
Matt’s schedule requires months of travelling and he has previously spoken of the challenges of the couple’s long-distance relationship. Matt and Gus took part in the 880-kilometre San Francisco-to-Los Angeles AIDS Life Cycle last month.
Gus and personal trainer Seth Gottesdiener (pictured above), known on Instagram as Seth G, posted images of themselves after a recent workout, prompting speculation a new romance was in the air.
Gus will make his acting debut in the next season of American Horror Story: 1984.
