Hunter Biden Says A Closeted Gay Mafia Runs Washington And He Calls It The Closetocracy
Hunter Biden has a new theory about what is broken in American politics, and it is not the one you would expect. Speaking on the I’ve Had It podcast on 18 July 2026, the former president’s son said the country’s biggest problem is not the oligarchy but what he calls the “closetocracy”, a closeted gay mafia that he claims is largely Republican and operates in Washington DC.
“I believe that the biggest problem in America is not the oligarchy,” Biden told hosts Jennifer Welch and Angie “Pumps” Sullivan. “It’s the closetocracy, as I call it.”
Then he sharpened it. “Everybody knows there is this closeted gay mafia, largely Republican, that exists in Washington, D.C.,” he said.
Biden did not name a single person. He kept the claim broad, which is worth flagging, because a sweeping accusation is easy to throw out and much harder to stand up.
So why does he think it matters? For Biden, the harm is psychological. He argues that hiding wears a person down, and that the damage leaks out onto everyone else.
“I believe that internal conflict creates so much vitriol inside a person that they take it out on the rest of the world,” he said.
It is a familiar idea in gay circles. The lawmaker who votes against his own community, then goes home to a private life he cannot admit to, has been a talking point for decades. Biden simply gave it a name and pointed it at one side of politics.
The I’ve Had It podcast is not a neutral room. Welch and Sullivan host one of the more combative progressive shows in the US, and the clip spread quickly on social media. Reaction split along predictable lines. Some heard a fair shot at hypocrisy. Others heard an ally drifting close to outing people, which sits badly for a community that fought hard to come out on its own terms.
Our own view is simple. Calling out anti-gay politicians who live one way in public and another in private is fair game. Guessing at who is secretly gay is something else, and the record shows it rarely ends well for the person being guessed about.
