Some athletes are known for their performance on the field, and others for their presence online. Gymnast Heath Thorpe has mastered both. A recent “Beach Sundays” post saw him soaking up the sun in nothing but a cap and some swimwear that appeared to have a rainbow motif, reminding everyone that he is, in his own words, “so back.” The photo quickly went viral, and for good reason.

First, let’s talk about that photo.

This is familiar territory for anyone who follows Thorpe. He has a knack for sharing snapshots of his life that are equal parts athletic and aesthetic. The swimwear in question comes from Gali Swimwear, an Aussie brand that celebrates the art of Indigenous culture on its swimwear. It’s another example of Thorpe knowing exactly what his audience appreciates, as he combines a celebration of his physique with a nod to the community. It’s a simple post, but it speaks volumes.

But he’s a serious contender, not just content.

Don’t let the relaxed beach photos fool you. Thorpe’s primary focus is gymnastics, where his record is formidable. With seven medals from the Oceania Championships, including four golds, he is a decorated athlete. He also claimed the all-around title at the 2023 Australian Championships and secured top-eight finishes at the World University Games. His dedication to the sport is clear, with a collection of medals to prove it.

The Olympic dream hit a snag, but it is not over.

So, what happened with the Paris 2024 Olympics? After a strong performance at the national championships, Thorpe was not selected for the team. In an interview with Ginnasticando, he admitted the outcome was “of course heartbreaking” after dedicating so much time to that one goal. But setbacks are often just setups for a comeback. “After taking a step back, I realised I still had more to offer to the world of gymnastics,” he explained. Now, with his sights set on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Thorpe feels he is hitting his stride, adding, “I feel as if I am really coming into my own.”

It all comes down to being himself.

Whether he is competing on the world stage or sharing a moment online, Thorpe’s authenticity is what connects. He combines elite athleticism with a personality that he refuses to hide. “Artistry has always been at the core of how I approach gymnastics,” he told Ginnasticando, “but also expression has always been who I am.” This blend of physical strength and genuine self-expression is what makes him a standout. Whatever comes next for Heath Thorpe, whether it’s more training for LA or more beach Sundays, we’ll be watching.
