“Heartstopper Forever” Lands On Netflix In July And Nick And Charlie Are Going Long-Distance

Netflix has set 17 July 2026 as the global release date for Heartstopper Forever, the feature-length finale of its queer teen drama. The film wraps the story four years to the week after the original series first landed, and yes, it hits every thread fans have been chasing since season one.

Kit Connor and Joe Locke return, and they’re producing too

Kit Connor and Joe Locke reprise their roles as Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring. This time they are also credited as executive producers, a promotion that reflects how much both actors have grown with the franchise. Yasmin Finney is back as Elle, and William Gao returns as Tao. Anna Maxwell Martin takes the role of Nick’s mum, a part previously played by Olivia Colman.

Uni is the plot

Series creator Alice Oseman, who wrote the original graphic novels, has built the film around one question. What happens to a teenage relationship when one person leaves for university?

“For a teenage relationship, this is a pretty huge hurdle to overcome. Each of them has some conflicting feelings about this development,” Oseman told Netflix. “Nick isn’t sure who he is without Charlie, and Charlie is nervous about being left behind.”

Long-distance is the quiet horror film of queer young adulthood. Oseman is clearly playing it straight. The emotional stakes do the work.

Why the format changed

Netflix originally greenlit a fourth season. The production then pivoted to a feature-length film. The result is a cinematic send-off instead of another eight-episode arc. It is the kind of move that tends to either land beautifully or feel rushed. Early footage suggests the former.

Heartstopper debuted on 22 April 2022 and quickly became one of the most-talked-about LGBTQIA+ shows of the decade. Oseman’s graphic novel series has sold millions of copies and been translated into dozens of languages. The film marks the end of this chapter for Nick and Charlie, though Oseman has left the door ajar for future Heartstopper Universe stories.

Clear your calendars for 17 July.
