Drew Starkey (JTA Talent)

Drew Starkey has been announced as one of the main stars in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film adaptation of William Burroughs’ novel Queer, reports Variety. The film is a gritty, semi-autobiographical story set against the backdrop of 1940s Mexico City and details an LGBTQIA+ story punctuated by lust, crime and obsession.

Who is Drew Starkey and why does he look familiar?

Drew is the 29-year-old actor who will take on the role of drug-addict Allerton who is a discharged American Navy serviceman, reports Variety. Allerton is the object of the main character Lee’s lust in Queer and his nonchalance towards Lee’s advances pushes the protagonist to obsession.

Starkey made a splash with his role as Garrett in the 2018 film adaption of Love, Simon. Since then he has had roles in Outer Banks, Hellraiser, The Devil All The Time and Scream. Guadagnino’s Queer marks Strakey’s most significant film role to date, reports Instinct.

Apart from acting, Starkey is also known for his varied interests and hobbies. He enjoys playing the piano, writing, and participating in a wide range of sports, including baseball, basketball, and football. He is also an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoys mountain climbing, mountain biking, fishing, weight-lifting, trap and skeet-shooting, swimming, juggling, frisbee, and golf, reports Instinct.

What else do we know about Queer?

The film will also star Daniel Craig in the lead role as Lee with Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman and Henrique Zaga to fill out the rest of the cast.

With such an impressive cast and crew, the film is already generating a lot of buzz and is sure to be a must-see for fans of Guadagnino’s previous LGBTQIA+ work such as Call Me By Your Name and those interested in exploring the world of William Burroughs. Guadagnino’s distinct visual style has been demonstrated most recently in Bones And All.

Filming for Queer is expected to begin in May at Cinecittà Studios in Rome where the entirety of the film set in Mexico will be completed, reports Variety.
