German Gay Soccer Players To Make History With Mass Coming Out On International Day Against Homophobia
According to the German weekly newspaper Preußische Allgemeine Zeitung, several gay German soccer players plan to come out together on May 17, 2024. This date is important because it’s the International Day Against Homophobia. The players, who are active in the Bundesliga, Germany’s top league, want to inspire others to be true to themselves.

The players apparently have the support of their respective clubs. The mass coming out is set to take place during the penultimate weekend of the Bundesliga season, adding to the significance of the occasion.
Couples Among the Players?
Marcus Urban, a retired German soccer player who co-founded Diversero, a global community for diversity, hinted that some of the players planning to come out might even be couples. This revelation adds an exciting layer to the already monumental event, showcasing the power of love and acceptance within the sport.
Urban, who came out 16 years after leaving the game, believes that this collective coming out will be a liberating experience for the players involved. He emphasises the importance of living authentically and not waiting for the world to change before embracing one’s true self.
The planned mass coming out in Germany follows in the footsteps of several other soccer players who have recently come out, including Josh Cavallo (Australia), Jake Daniels (England), and Jakub Jankto (Czech Republic). However, as of now, there are no openly gay active male professional soccer players in Germany.
